iConsult is iCons in Medicine's flagship program.  iConsult is powered by a volunteer network of medical specialists who use the internet to share clinical expertise with healthcare professionals in remote and medically underserved areas around the world. This free teleconsultation service harnesses the energy and knowledge of our global volunteer network to bring state-of-the-art medical knowledge to the point of care wherever medicine is practiced.

How iConsult works
iConsult combines a desktop computer program with this website to enable healthcare professionals in remote and medically underserved areas (Requestors) to receive free advice on difficult cases. Requestors use the computer program to complete a case consultation form that can include digital images. The software saves the information until internet connectivity is available. The consultation form is then uploaded and routed to our alliance of  volunteer physicians (Volunteers) according to specialty area.

For Volunteers, the website’s built-in communication tools make it easy to respond to cases and correspond with Requestors. During each step of the process, communications are encrypted and transmitted securely to ensure the confidentiality of clinical information.

5 easy steps:
  1. A patient with a difficult case requiring a specialty consultation visits a healthcare provider (Requestor).
  2. The Requestor submits a consultation request for a specific specialty using the iConsult computer program.
  3.  All available Volunteers in the selected specialty receive an e-mail notification that assistance is needed on a case.
  4. A Volunteer responds to the e-mail by logging in to the iCons in Medicine website to review the consultation form and accept the case.
  5. The Volunteer replies to the case within 48 hours. The Requestor and the Volunteer continue to exchange information on the case as needed.
